Jasper’s Utila Animal shelter is small, privately funded and run by volunteers. It does not have the capacity to take care of every animal whose owners do not, for one reason or another, want or cannot care for them any more. Shelter has ‘no kill’ policy and offers home to every homeless animal. Please visit shelter animals if you are thinking of adding a pet to your home. Help break the overpopulation cycle.
- 6–8 million animals end up in shelters all over the world each year, half of which will probably not be adopted.
- Most pets end up homeless through no fault of their own—because people who adopt them, on the island temporarily, do not think of the devastating consequences for their pets when they leave the islands. Local people adopt cute puppies and abandon them once they grow up and are not cute any more.
- Shelters can provide advice on making your relationship with your pet the best it can be for the rest of their life.
