Jasper’s Utila Animal Shelter is a small, privately funded shelter, mainly run by volunteers. Much as we would like to, we don’t have the capacity to take care of every animal whose owners do not want to or cannot, for one reason or another, care for them any longer. Becuse of this, our shelter has a ‘no kill’ policy and tries to finds a home for every animal in need that comes through our door. Some of them live at our shelter and others are fostered until they can find their forever home.
There are not enough homes for all the animals that are born on our planet every year. Each year, 8 to 12 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are euthanized all over the world because there are simply not enough homes for them. 6–8 million animals end up in shelters all over the world each year, half of which will probably not be adopted. By adopting from Jasper’s Animal Shelter, you can make a difference.
Most pets on Utila end up homeless through no fault of their own because:
- ... tourists adopt them temporarily and do not think of the devastating consequences for their pets when they leave the islands.
- ... people adopt cute kittens and puppies and abandon them once they grow up and are not cute any more.
- ... foreigners relocate to our island and then leave and can’t/don’t bring their pets with them.
Shelters can provide advice on making your relationship with your pet the best it can be for the rest of their life.
If you are on the Island of Utila, please visit the shelter if you are thinking of adding a pet to your home. By doing this, you can help break the overpopulation cycle.

If you are on the Isla make an appointment to come and talk to us and meet your potential new family member. If you aren’t on the Isla contact us here (insert link) to have a chat and video call with your potential new family member.

If you are not on Utila we do all the work for you to get your new family member to you. We are experts in this, we have rehomed cats and dogs all over the US and even as far as Europe. We know exactly what paperwork is involved and our amazing network of volunteers will have you face to face with your new pet in no time at all. All you need to do is meet them on arrival and love them.
